Colt Frontier Six Shooter Revolver .44-40 WCF Antique Single Action Army 1881 Production

This Colt Frontier Six Shooter is an authentic black powder-frame Single Action Army revolver manufactured in 1881 and chambered in the legendary .44-40 WCF cartridge. Known for bridging the gap between the American frontier and the early cattle-drive era, the Frontier Six Shooter became one of Colt’s most recognizable and historically important revolvers. This example features a shortened 5 1/8-inch original barrel and retains much of its classic Old West character despite extensive restoration work performed sometime during its long life.

The revolver currently wears a non-factory restored blue finish that remains visually strong, covering most metal surfaces with only light handling wear visible. The smooth one-piece walnut grip has been cleaned and refinished while maintaining attractive color and fit. Several original markings remain visible, including the desirable “44 C.F.” designation on the trigger guard bow and partial patent markings. The barrel is correctly numbered to the revolver, and the loading gate assembly numbers also correspond correctly to the gun.

As expected from a well-traveled antique Colt, there are several condition notes collectors will appreciate knowing. The barrel address was polished away during refinishing, the backstrap appears to be a likely replacement, and the cylinder no longer displays visible numbers. The action remains mechanically functional though somewhat stiff, and the bore shows oxidation and pitting with strong remaining rifling. Overall, this is a true frontier-era Colt revolver with significant visual appeal and authentic antique presence that would fit well in a Western collection or antique revolver display.
